February 20, 2008 - The Research Institute of Construction & Economy in Tokyo, Japan was interested in infrastructure concerns that the Youngstown 2010 Citywide Plan addresses due to similar situations happening across Japan. The Japanese government-affiliated research institute sent Yoshihiro Karaki (Executive Fellow) and Yuichiro Nakagawa (Researcher) to Youngstown to learn about the 2010 Plan strategies and implementation related to infrastructure issues.

September 12 - 14, 2007 – A research group of university
professors from five different cities in Japan visited Youngstown
over the course of three days to learn about the smart-declining
practices of Youngstown 2010. The group, led by Dr. Hiroshi Yahagi
from the Graduate School of Creative Cities, Osaka City University,
met with various city officials, neighborhood groups and community
leaders to gain insight on population decline strategies to
possibly apply them to the future of Japanese cities.

American Planning Association National Conference, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania
April 17, 2007 – A crowd of approximately 50 people, many of whom lead
planning processes themselves, attended this conference session to
hear Anthony Kobak (Chief Planner & 2010 Project Manager, City of
Youngstown), Richard Hahn (President, Keynote Media Group) and
Barbara Faga (Executive Vice President & Principal, EDAW) discuss
the techniques and choices that lead to the success of the
Youngstown 2010 planning process.

Ohio’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative
Celebration
January 11, 2007 –
The State of Ohio’s 22nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Commemorative Celebration pays tribute to individuals and
organizations for their efforts to advance King’s dream of racial
equality. Youngstown 2010 won an award for one of the seven award
categories. “Our communities and our state are better because of
these honorees’ commitment to justice, equality, love and respect,”
said Governor Ted Strickland. The mission of 2010 is to improve the
quality of life for the city and reverse its severe economic
downturn since the demise of the steel industry. Youngstown 2010
has been instrumental in revitalizing neighborhoods, creating and
supporting businesses, as well as supporting health care, education
and technology and more.
Winner - National Planning Excellence
Award for Public Outreach
American Planning Association
December 19, 2006 – Building public support for the Youngstown 2010
vision and comprehensive plan involved a far-reaching marketing and
public education campaign. More than 5,000 people directly
participated in the planning process. For this effort, Youngstown
has been named recipient of the American Planning Association (APA)
2007 National Planning Excellence Award for Public Outreach. “From
radio, newspaper and television coverage, to billboards, tee-shirts
and balloons, city officials left no stone unturned in it’s public
outreach campaign,” said Carol Rhea, AICP, chair of the APA Awards
Committee. APA’s
national planning awards are considered by U.S. planners to be the
profession’s highest honor.
Best Idea - “Creative Shrinkage”
The New York Times Magazine
December 10, 2006 – The New York Times Magazine sixth annual year in
ideas looked back at the best of 2006. The magazine looked back on the
passing year from a distinctive vantage point: that of ideas.
Youngstown was recognized for 2010 and planning for a smaller city.

Conference Session - “Marketing, Public

Success”
Ohio Kentucky Indiana Regional Planning Conference, Cincinnati,
OH
October 5, 2006 - The Youngstown 2010 planning process was the
featured case-study for the conference session presented by Anthony
Kobak (Chief Planner & 2010 Project Manager, City of Youngstown),
Richard Hahn (President, Keynote Media Group) and Ken Ryan (Principal, EDAW) to a standing-room only crowd of 70+ urban planners, elected
officials, consultants and others interested in the latest planning
trends and techniques.

Designing Public Consensus
March 10, 2006 - The Youngstown 2010 planning process is a
featured case study in a book entitled Designing Public Consensus.
Barbara Faga, chair of the board of EDAW – an international design
firm, authored the book about public participation in the planning
process. She highlights other projects such as the World Trade Center
site in New York City, a park designed above Boston’s “Big Dig” and a
new zoning code for the City of Chicago.

Ohio Planning Conference
September 30, 2005 - The Youngstown 2010
Citywide Plan and Process was chosen as the winner in the Outstanding
Community Planning category for the 2005 Ohio Planning Conference (OPC)
Awards Program. The Ohio Planning Conference is the state
chapter of the American Planning Association. As noted in The
Ohio Planner's News (Nov/Dec 2005 issue), "The [awards]
committee was struck by the sheer scale of this planning process.
The marketing effort was extraordinary and generated the high level
of public involvement required by the plan. This planning
process stands as a model for all communities."

Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
Cambridge, MA
November 19, 2004 - Youngstown 2010 was
the subject of all the talk at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology when Jay Williams, Community Development Director and Sarah
Lown, Economic Development Director at Eastgate Regional Council of
Governments visited. They served as keynote speakers for a discussion
series on third tier cities - defined as smaller industrial cities
which serve as the primary centers of the regional economy. Youngstown
2010 was held up as a model planning process for urban revitalization.

Public Service Award
Public Service Institute, Youngstown State University
June 22, 2004 - The Youngstown 2010
planning team accepted a Public Service Award from the Public Service
Institute of Youngstown State University on behalf of the Youngstown
2010 initiative. The award is given to an individual who demonstrates
extraordinary public service and dedication to the Mahoning Valley
community. This was the first time since the inception of the award
program in 1998 that a project, not an individual, has won the award.
