Aerial View Description
The North Heights neighborhood is one of the City’s finest neighborhoods, as it offers
well-maintained and landscaped homes, tree-lined streets, and walkable
access to shopping and recreation. The neighborhood’s eclectic mix of
housing and people creates a wonderful living environment by bringing
together a truly diverse group of people and architecture.
Recreational opportunities in the neighborhood include Crandall Park,
Northside Pool, Stambaugh Golf Course, and Noah’s Park. The Union Square Plaza offers shopping including a
grocery store, specialty stores, food establishments, and banking. Another neighborhood amenity is the
Jewish Community Center, which
offers a complete workout facility, swimming pool, classrooms and
meeting facilities, an outdoor walking trail, tennis courts and Noah’s
Park. Businesses and employers in the neighborhood include
Northside
Medical Center,
along with many other small business located along Gypsy Lane and
Belmont Avenue. Northside Medical Center is one of the City’s two
major hospitals, and its location affords neighborhood residents easy
access to healthcare. North Heights’ people, housing, recreation, and
beauty make it a great place to be.
Types of Homes
There are approximately 450 homes in
the North Heights neighborhood, designed by architects with individual
details that set their appearance apart from most others in the city.
Many of the houses are brick and two stories, although the Cape Cod
style with its one-and-a-half stories are also popular. There
are many colonial revival and bungalow designs, and Madera Avenue has
a number of Tudor revivals with leaded casement windows. Most of
the other homes feature double-hung windows, many with leaded glass,
as well as full front porches. The largest of the homes are
immediately adjacent to Crandall Park, within a historic district, on
Tod Lane and Guadalupe Avenue. Two
car garages accompany a majority of the homes, and porte cocheres are
in evidence occasionally. The neighborhood predominantly
consists of single family homes, although the option of multi-family
and apartment living also exists. The typical single family home in
the neighborhood rests on a 50 x 150 lot.

Testimonials
"The beautiful architecture,
affordable homes, and proximity to retail, park, and cultural
amenities made my decision to choose this neighborhood as my home.
I can walk to YSU football games, as well as to the grocery store, and
it's only a 15 minute bicycle ride to Downtown. The wonderful
diversity of the people who live here is an added plus."
Rick Alcorn, North Heights

NOTE: A number of surrounding
communities have open enrollment in their school district. These
communities offer private school options, as well. This option
is a consideration while living in the City of Youngstown because
there is virtually no traffic congestion in the region.
Some schools on this list might offer
curriculum for children with special needs. Nevertheless,
additional schools do exist in the City and surrounding communities
that specialize in providing such services.
